Alright, as promised heres the article regarding AKB48. Sorry for the long wait! Heres a picture from Dannychoo.com.

The picture show most of the member in AKB48. More info after the jump.
Well, as the name implied, there are 48 members which are split into 3 groups. However, a quick look at their official webpage shows that currently there are only 39 members.
As mentioned before, the team is split into 3 teams. These are Team A, Team K, Team B. Hence the name AKB48. Currently the only team that has full member is Team B.
Below info extracted from Wiki.
Unlike other idol groups in Japan, AKB48 is theater-based and has their own theater in Akihabara (a district in Tokyo) where they perform once every weekday, and twice on both Saturday and Sunday. The theater is set up in on the 8th floor of Don Quixote.
A theater to showcase the team work and at the same time earn money to support the team. A good move by the company. Also, as their member are always changing, like morning musume, it will allow more youth to get into the showbizz.
Heres a look at one of their photoshoot. Not sure whether they are still in the group or not thou.

Now you probably heard of a group whereby the company wanted to give out poster to the customer who bought the CD and if they collect all the different types of poster, they will be invited to some event.
Well, the above mentioned steps was how I get to know AKB48. Heres the extracted text from Wiki.
AKB48 Theater Special: A poster was given for a purchase of any version of this single at the AKB48 Theater Café. Having only one member from AKB48 on each poster, there were a total of 44 different types of posters. These posters were handed out randomly to any purchaser. Anyone who has collected all 44 types were invited to a Spring Festival by AKB48.[1] However, DefSTAR Records later announced that this offer will be cancelled due to the fact that this might be against the law, attracting purchasers by offering a special reward that will cost lots of money to achieve.
Good thing that it was canceled. At first, I thought that this is just another money sucking group but later on, when I heard their song i thought to myself, Wow, they’re good.
Heres the song that I heard.

AKB48 - 桜の花びらたち
This is their debut song. Of course some of the members that you see in the video is no longer in the group. Oh and the 2008 version of this song you can view it at the previous post here.
Heres are more video of the group.

Although the team produced beautiful songs, I don’t like the idea of ‘graduating’ a member after they are ‘deemed not worthy to be in the group or not worthy to the company.’
However, the pro of doing these is that it will give the girls more exposure to the show business as well as let potential company know of the singer which might ‘welcome’ them into their flag.

Nice writeup on AKB48. The AKB48 Theater is a great hangout spot in Akihabara District; those without tickets to the nightly live shows are invited to watch on a big-screen TV in the cafe, which is nice. The crowd is always polite and interesting. I really enjoyed it there in January. AKB48 is a great concept (the concert DVDs are worth getting) and I hope it continues for years to come.
